2) To keep radiographic equipment securely and safely to avoid any theft or misplace.
3) Not to stand a radiation equipment unnecessary.
4) Always wear film badge while handling radiographic equipment.
5) Always use radiation detectors (Survey meter / Gamma tone) during handling radiation equipment.
6) To make sure that radiation machines are not stored along with unexposed films explosives and dangerous goods.
SPECIFIC SAFETY MEASURES:
1) As far as possible, field radiography should be carried out when there is little or no occupancy around.
2) An appropriate area around the radiation machine must be cordoned off during field radiography so that the radiation levels outside the area do not exceed the reference radiation levels for members of the public.
3) Radiation warning symbols must be conspicuously posted along the cordon offtape/rope.
4) When the radiography work is carried out at night time the radiography setup to the boundary of cordon off all sites must be adequately illumination throughout the duration of radiography work.
5) The concerned radiographer must be available on site when the radiography is in operation.
6) During panoramic the primary beam should be directed towards area of minimum occupancy.
7) When using the gamma ray source pencil must never be touched directly with hands in any condition.
8) Radiography work at elevated place and at location where accessibility is restricted or limited should be carried out very carefully.
9) Set the centering / supporting and fastening devise must be use or positioning radiography X-ray machine in order to avoid mishaps such as accidental fall etc.
10) Positioning oneself behind the X-ray machine making use of the shielding provided should always operate the radiography equipment by the body of equipment.
11) All operations should be planed in advance and accidents in minimum possible time.
12) After termination of each expose, it must be verified by means of a radiation survey meter that the machine has indeed returned to its safe position.
13) After completion of each expose all equipment must be surely looked in the strobe place.
14) The personal monitoring films must be regularly returned to head office for onward submission to HPD-PNSTECH for evaluation whether used or unused.
15) Two persons must be patrolling out side the cordoned off area during radiography.
STORAGE OF RADIOGRAPHY SOURCE:
1. The radiography equipment and sources when not in use must always be stored in pit under lock and key.
2. The proper storage of sources must be verified after every operation with radiation survey meter both at the time of keeping them inside the storage pit and while talking them out of the storage for use at side.
3. The radiation storage must be conspicuously posted with appropriate warning signs along with radiation symbols.
4. One key of source storage pit shall be with the site in-charge and the other one with the concerted radiographer.
MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP OF RADIATION MEASURING AND DEVICES:
1) All the instruments shall always be stored in a dust free dry and preferably air condition rooms. Toxic chemicals should not be stored near the instruments.
2) The instruments shall not be kept in high radiation area or contaminated area.
3) Care shall be taken to ensure that the instruments are not contaminated during their use and switched off immediately after their use.
4) When not in use for long time instruments should be stored after removing their batteries.
5) The concerned radiographer must be available on site when the radiography is in operation.
6) Periodic cheek on instrument performance shall be made and relevant observation shall be recorded.
7) All personal monitoring film badges shall be regularly returned to head office for evolution on monthly basis.
STORAGE OF RADIOGRAPHY SOURCE:
ACTION BY RADIOGRAPHERS:
- Using a survey meter, measure the does rate around the area and establish a new safe barrier (e.g. beyond which the does rate is less then 1-m rem/hr). The survey meter used should be capable of reading high radiation doses.
- Restrict access to his barrier and display a warning light round it together with a radiation warning notice. If barrier materials are not available sentries should be posted to ensure that no one passes through the barrier except those engaged in rescue operations. Detain any person who may have been inside the barrier the accident. If it is impossible, obtain their names, addresses and telephone numbers so that they can be contacted latter if necessary.
- Think and plan carefully a course of action while outside the barrier prepare all equipment required for the rescue operation.
- Inform the person in-charge of the area where the work is conducted of the mishap and the proposed action to be taken.
- Attempt to place the source in its container quickly. Never try to pick the source with bare hands. A second person must be stand at the barrier to time the operation and shout when the permitted time in up.
- Try to attenuate the radiation intensity using whatever materials are available (e.g. concrete block, stand wood etc).
- Call for assistance from the supervisor who will summon any other necessary help. In case he is not available, advice may be obtained from the competent authority PAEC.
